The Houston CALL Project & the Joan Mitchell Foundation
The Houston Creating A Living Legacy or CALL Project is a program of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, who created it in 2007 to assist visual artists with career documentation. In 2011, the Foundation expanded their CALL Program nationally with the selection of four CALL Partner Organizations who received funds to work through a pilot phase so they may develop a localized version of the CALL Project for their community.

Through the fiscal sponsorship of Fresh Arts, the Joan Mitchell Foundation awarded Studio One Archive Resource funds to complete the final year of the CALL Project's pilot phase that began at DiverseWorks in 2011. Since then, eight Houston artists, including Rachel Hecker, Terrell James, Mary Jenewein, Charles Mary Kubricht, Bert Long, David McGee, Beth Secor, and Toby Topek, received assistance with collecting, organizing and digitizing their history and the input of their history into a CALL Database. Working with these artists in their studios and homes, has provided us with a highly invaluable and unique learning experience and allowed us to discover how we might create a sustainable program to serve artists in the future.

Eligible artists include those who have practiced for twenty years or more, currently reside in Houston or an adjacent county and meet one or more of the following criteria:
  • Contributed to the community as an educator
  • Maintained a long term affiliation with an arts organization as a board member, volunteer, member, and/or donating artist
  • Served as the founder of an arts organization
  • Received high recognition locally and/or nationally for their creative achievements
  • Worked to positively impact their community through social activism
Artists are selected by an annual nomination and interview process. Upon acceptance, artists are provided assistance in the following areas:
  • Organization of existing records and artwork
  • Documentation of works
  • Digitization of records
  • Special projects related to the preservation of their history
  • Estate planning to incorporate the records of their practice, including artwork
